Two respected Republican senators indicated this week that they would be willing to support an investigation into Donald Trump and his alleged ties to Russia.
Daily Mail reported that both Lindsey Graham and Senator Bob Corker said they were concerned about reports alleging US agencies had intercepted phone calls last year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Trump’s 2016 campaign team. The congressman spoke out against Trump despite the fact that current and former US officials said they had no evidence that Trump’s campaign was working with the Russians on hacking or other efforts to influence the election.
“I do not believe it is appropriate for Congress to act based on a newspaper article,” Graham said. “However, it is imperative that Congress perform oversight regarding any potential campaign contacts between Trump officials and Russian intelligence officials.”
He added that an investigation is needed to determine if there could be valid reason for the contact.
“If they do exist, the contacts may have a logical explanation, but we will never know until Congress spends the time to investigate the matter,” he said. “If in fact there are campaign contacts between Trump officials and Russian intelligence officers that would be a very serious event and would justify the Senate forming a Select Committee to look at all things related to Russia.”
“The Russians have been trying to break the backbone of democracies all over the world, and clearly in my view, interfered in the 2016 election,” Graham continued. “Any investigation should also include leaks coming from the White House and other government agencies. These leaks are damaging to our national security and the individuals involved must be punished.”
Graham concluded by saying these reports have cast doubt over Trump’s entire administration.
“The accusations regarding the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia are creating a cloud over the White House,” he said. “They should be fairly investigated by the Congress in a bipartisan manner. It would serve the President’s interests to get to the bottom of this so he can move forward with his agenda.”
Corker appeared to agree that a probe into Trump and his Russian ties should be launched.
“There is a broader discussion about how we handle something that is important to make sure that we all fully understand what’s occurred, and it’s not in any way a discussion that says the Intel Committee is not doing its job,” the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman said, according to The Hill. “I don’t know what we’re mulling toward, but hopefully there will be some consolidation in the next few days.”
It’s sad that these Republicans are turning on their president so blatantly. SHARE this story if Graham and Corker’s statement make you SICK!
